The Argentina international has returned to Bodymoor Heath for the first time since his desired late switch to Manchester United failed to materialise.
Unai Emery wants to draw a line under the events of recent months and will aim to reintegrate Martinez into his squad.
But former Villa striker Garry Thompson believes does not think the keeper, dropped for last month’s 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace because Emery was concerned about his focus, should be granted an instant recall.
Thompson told the Express & Star: “I don’t think Bizot has done an awful lot wrong. He’s steady.
“I’m not sure Martinez should be allowed to just waltz back in the team, after he was pushing for a move.
“I would keep him on the bench for now and ease him back in. I wouldn’t make it easy for him. I would make him wait a game or two.
“Other players take note of that. You have to manage the situation.”
“If Unai made the decision that he wasn’t in the right frame of mind, that’s one thing.
“But if there is any hint he didn’t fancy it himself, it would be like: ‘On the bench with me, son’.”
Martinez’s desire to leave Villa this summer and his absence from the Palace match has upset some sections of the fanbase.
But while Thompson thinks Emery should be ready to take a hard line, he also believes the keeper has a route back into the affections of supporters.
He said: “Fans will always forgive, so long as you are trying for the cause. He will make a save, he will do what he does and he will soon be back in the fold.”
