Erik ten Hag’s Leverkusen replacement raves about player Manchester United let go for free, ‘where he belongs’

Surplus to requirements at Manchester United, one iconic midfielder is being treasured at his new club.

After a long and uncertain wait over his future, Danish superstar Christian Eriksen has penned a new deal in Germany.

Eriksen was released by Manchester United in the summer, after a three year stint at the Red Devils where he won two trophies.

Eriksen had previously played for Brentford, Inter Milan, Tottenham and Ajax, and is now taking his talents to the Bundesliga for the first time, signing with Wolfsburg.

The midfielder’s move to Germany has created a lot of intrigue, welcomed across the league.

Leverkusen boss praises Eriksen

Christian Eriksen’s move to Wolfsburg has been praised by Bayer Leverkusen’s new boss, who succeeded Erik ten Hag – who was fired after just two league games.

Kasper Hjulmand was recently appointed at Leverkusen. He was Denmark boss between 2020 and 2024, including at Euro 2020 when Eriksen almost lost his life.

Hjulmand told the Sueddeutsche Zeitung: “I’m very happy that he’s found a good club and that we’ll see him back on the pitch. That’s where he belongs.

“He’s a very special player. Everyone who’s played with him says, ‘He’s one of the best I’ve played with. He loves the ball.”

Eriksen excited for new challenge

After being unveiled by Wolfsburg, Eriksen said he was excited to play in a new league, and explained that he was won over by manager Paul Simonis.

Eriksen explained: “For me, VfL Wolfsburg is my first stop in the Bundesliga, I’m really looking forward to this new adventure. I’m convinced that we can make a difference together in Wolfsburg.

“The discussions with those in charge were very good. I immediately sensed that Paul Simonis had a clear idea for the team and also for me.

“The fact that the squad includes many familiar faces from the Danish national team makes VfL particularly attractive to me.”

Sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz told Kicker that the deal for the free agent came together quickly.

He said: “We are very happy that this opportunity has arisen for us at short notice. With Christian Eriksen, we are getting a player who has seen and experienced everything at the highest level.

“His enormous experience, his playing ability, and his personality will provide valuable inspiration, especially to our young players.”
