Report: Why Newcastle have delayed plans for changing the club's crest

Newcastle United have stalled controversial plans to change the club’s iconic crest.

In May, Newcastle United confirmed plans to change the club badge.

The decision was reportedly taken because the intricate nature of the current design was difficult to replicate at scale.

Such is the emotional attachment many supporters will have to the current design, which has been in place since 1988, Newcastle fans were unhappy with the plans to change the club’s badge.

The club have consulted with supporters along the way, and it was initially thought that the start of the 2026/27 season would feature the new design on the club’s shirt.

However, they have been delayed because of an issue behind the scenes.

Newcastle United plans to change club badge delayed by deadlines

According to The Daily Mail, there have been problems with deadlines.

Kit suppliers Adidas and the Premier League themselves naturally require time to look through the plans and that seems to be an issue.

The report adds that adding a new crest design to the Newcastle United kit could now happen in 2027.

In 2022, the FA introduced new rules to protect heritage assets such as a club’s crest.

A statement on the FA’s official website read: “Under the new rules, if a club wishes to make a material change to its club crest, or change its recognised home shirt colours, it must undertake a thorough and extensive consultation process with supporters.

“A club must also be able to evidence that a majority of its supporters are in favour of any proposed changes (such as via an independently-run poll of season ticket holders, the club’s Community Benefit Society, and supporters that have attended a certain number of home matches).”

Eddie Howe’s verdict on Newcastle United’s plans to change crest

When the news broke earlier this year, it was a big topic amongst supporters.

While change isn’t always a bad thing, fans may understandably be hesitant about changing something that carries such emotional weight simply for the sake of it.

Eddie Howe summed it up in typically astute fashion when speaking earlier this year.

Howe shared his verdict on Newcastle’s plans to change club crest, saying: “I am a great believer in respecting tradition. But then…you have to try and move forward.

“If something does need to be changed for the betterment of the club, then I am all for that.

“The great thing, though, that I took from it was the collaboration with the supporters – that has to be there.

“It can’t be done without their consent.”

Whatever you think about plans for a new design, the current one has at least two years left in it.
