Premier League champions Liverpool are preparing for a comeback after the international break as they look to extend their lead at the top of the table.

Most of Arne Slot's squad were away on international duty last weekend, but they're now back in Merseyside to continue their title defence, which has started off on a high note. The Reds have triumphed in all three of their opening matches, defeating Bournemouth, Newcastle and Arsenal. This means Liverpool are the only team with a perfect record, placing them two points ahead at the top of the table at this early stage.

Burnley are next in line for the Reds, still smarting from their crushing 3-2 defeat to Manchester United. Scott Parker's newly-promoted side paid dearly for conceding a penalty in the 97th minute, having twice come from behind at Old Trafford and coming painfully close to securing a draw.

Liverpool will be cautious as Burnley did manage to topple fast-starters Sunderland in their only home game so far in the league, while the Clarets also defeated Derby County at Turf Moor in the Carabao Cup. Slot has never faced Burnley, so he'll be relieved to have an extra strong squad thanks to the arrival of Alexander Isak on transfer deadline day and two stars who've returned from injury. Here's all the latest news from Anfield.

Liverpool have welcomed back Jeremie Frimpong and Stefan Bajcetic to training following their respective injury layoffs, reports the Mirror.

Flying fullback Frimpong was sidelined due to a hamstring injury, missing out on the Netherlands' two World Cup qualifying matches as well as Liverpool's last two Premier League games, after the 24-year-old's short-lived outing against Bournemouth.

Meanwhile, 20-year-old midfielder Bajcetic has been out of action for three months after undergoing hamstring surgery. He spent the latter half of the previous season on loan at Spanish outfit Las Palmas.

Wirtz decision

Michael Ballack has backed Florian Wirtz's decision to reject Bayern Munich and sign for Liverpool instead. In 2006, Ballack himself moved from Bayer Leverkusen to Bayern, a path that Wirtz could have followed this summer.

However, the former Leverkusen star chose to join Liverpool, a move that Ballack supports. Speaking to Sport Bild, the German legend questioned: "Would it have made sense for [Wirtz] and his development to play another two or three years in the Bundesliga with Bayern?" He added: "Of course, he would win championships there.

"But is the Bundesliga still the ultimate challenge for him at the highest level? No, because the Bundesliga was left behind by the Premier League years ago."
