“I can’t wait” – Player shares first words after Manchester City exit

Manuel Akanji has spoken publicly for the first time since joining Inter Milan on loan from Manchester City, a deal which includes a €15m purchase option.

The Swiss defender, who is set for his debut in the Derby d’Italia against AC Milan, gave an extensive interview to [**DAZN**](https://www.fcinternews.it/in-primo-piano/akanji-l-inter-e-un-top-club-d-europa-voglio-vincere-tre-compagni-mi-hanno-scritto-subito-la-maglia-di-vieiri-991199) about the move and his expectations in Italy.

He revealed that his first day at the club was full of introductions, as he finally met Simone Inzaghi in person after only speaking by phone. _“Everyone seems really enthusiastic, just like I am. I can’t wait to start with my first match,”_ he said.

Asked why he chose Inter for his next stop after Manchester City, Akanji was direct: _“Because it is one of the best clubs in Europe. As simple as that.”_ He stressed the Nerazzurri’s recent achievements in Europe, pointing to their two Champions League finals in the last three years as proof of the level of Italian football.

The 30-year-old admitted he will need to adjust his style, since Serie A is far more tactical compared to the speed and intensity of the Premier League.

Akanji shared a personal story too, recalling that the first shirt he ever owned was Christian Vieri’s. He now hopes to find an old photograph to prove it. _“I remember seeing the picture with me wearing that jersey, and my mother told me the story as well,”_ he explained.

The centre-back emphasised how welcomed he felt, with Yann Sommer, Lautaro Martínez and Denzel Dumfries all messaging him straight away to offer help. Former Wolfsburg and Torino defender Ricardo Rodríguez, a long-time friend, also gave advice about life in Milan, including where to live and where to eat.

Away from football, Akanji said he prefers spending time with his children rather than watching matches, though he follows other sports such as American football, tennis, basketball, padel and Formula 1. He also recalled family holidays in Sardinia, praising the beaches and scenery, and said he is excited to explore Milan and the surrounding areas.

When asked about his objectives, Akanji did not hesitate. _“When you play for a club like Inter, you want to win the league every year. And also the Champions League. They were so close to winning it, and I hope to help them this year,”_ he stated.

With his debut looming, he made it clear that his ambition is to win trophies and make a strong impact in his time in Italy.
