13 players set to miss Man City vs Man United as injuries mount over international break

Manchester United and Manchester City face several injury concerns ahead of Sunday’s derby, with 13 players at risk of missing the clash after a bruising international break.

Both clubs have started their Premier League campaigns slowly, with United collecting just four points from a possible nine and grabbing their first win of the season – 3-2 at home to Burnley – courtesy of Bruno Fernandes’ injury-time penalty before the international break.

City, meanwhile, lost consecutive league games to Tottenham and Brighton, with their only points of the season coming in a 4-0 away thrashing of Wolves on the opening weekend.

Looking to restart their season strongly, both sides are dealing with multiple injury concerns ahead of the feisty clash at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, as more than a dozen stars could miss the Premier League encounter.

Pep Guardiola’s plans to secure his first home win of the Premier League season on Sunday have been impacted by a fresh injury setback during the international break, as Omar Marmoush suffered a knee ligament injury while on duty with Egypt.

The 26-year-old forward was forced off during Egypt’s 0-0 draw with Burkina Faso on Tuesday and was pictured wearing a knee brace and using crutches after the game.

Marmoush has joined a long list of absentees at the Etihad Stadium, which also includes summer signing Rayan Cherki, who was ruled out for two months with a thigh injury before the international break.

City are also expected to be without long-term absentees Mateo Kovacic and Kalvin Phillips on Sunday, while both Savinho and Phil Foden were unavailable for the 2-1 defeat at Brighton, though the club hope the pair could return this weekend.

Question marks also remain over a trio of central defenders – Josko Gvardiol is yet to play for City this season, while Abdukodir Khusanov was withdrawn from the Brighton clash with a minor knock.

John Stones is also a doubt for the derby after he was forced to withdraw from England duty with a muscle injury.

Man United have fewer injury concerns ahead of the derby, with Lisandro Martinez the only long-term absentee at Old Trafford as he continues recovery from a knee injury.

There are also doubts over both Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount’s availability after the pair picked up injuries against Burnley, with Cunha forced off in the first half with a hamstring problem.

United will also hope Diogo Dalot has recovered in time after he withdrew from Portugal’s squad with muscle discomfort.
