FC Wil sporting director Michael Lang has insisted the presence of Newcastle United star Fabian Schär on the club’s board is nothing but a positive.
[Blick have an interview](https://www.blick.ch/) with Lang today in which he discusses various aspects of running the club, after taking charge this summer.
Wil are the Swiss club where the Newcastle defender started his playing career in 2009, aged 17, having been born in the region as well.
He only played two games in his first season but became a first team regular the following year and by 2012 had earned the attention Swiss giants Base. He joined them that year before spells at Hoffenheim, Deportivo La Coruna and Newcastle, where he’s been a regular since 2018.
Now 33-years-old he’s looking to the future and in 2023 he became a part of Wil’s board of directors, alongside club president Maurice Weber and entrepreneur Markus Mettler.
He admitted at the time that it was the perfect start for him as he looked beyond his playing career to what came next for him. And, fortunately, it appears there’s no conflict with the new sporting director.
“It’s extremely valuable that he sits on the board and brings football expertise,” he said.
“It’s important to have someone on the board who questions things critically and helps shape the club’s strategic direction. Someone who knows how the football business works. I’m sure his influence at FC Wil will be even greater after his active career.”
