Preview | Luton Town (A)

Friday, 12 September, 2025

**The Game**

Luton Town v Argyle. Kenilworth Road. Saturday, 13 September. 3pm. Sky Bet League One.

**The Opposition**

Luton were relegated last season; their second successive relegation, having gone down having spent one season in the Premier League, in 2023/24.

That said, Matt Bloomfield initiated a revival towards the end of the season, with six wins in the last 11 games, but it was not enough, and the Hatters were relegated on the final day.

This season, Luton have won four of their six games, beating Wimbledon (1-0), Peterborough United (2-0), Wigan Athletic (1-0) and Burton Albion (3-0).

The Hatters have lost twice, being defeated by Bradford City (2-1) and Cardiff City (1-0).

**The Gaffer**

**Matt Bloomfield** began his playing career at Ipswich Town but, having made one League Cup appearance, departed for Wycombe Wanderers. He could not have known the relationship that was about to begin.

Bloomfield joined the Chairboys in December 2003 and, over 18 years later, in February 2022, played his final game for the club. He had accrued 557 appearances.

After retiring, Bloomfield became manager at Colchester United, but it was not long until he returned to Wycombe, and succeeded Gareth Ainsworth as their boss. He was doing an eye-catching job, and it must have been difficult for a Wycombe legend to depart, but he opted to take the Luton job in January 2025.

**The Squad**

Dublin-born **Millenic Alli,** 25, spent many years in non-league football before getting a break at Exeter City. He spent time with the likes of Workington, South Shields, Chorley and Halifax Town, before moving to Exeter in January 2024. A year later, Luton bought him for a reported £1.5m. Mostly operating from the left wing, Alli has scored one goal in six games this season.

Defender **Nigel Lonwijk** (below) is on his sixth loan spell from parent club Wolverhampton. This included a season with Argyle, in 2022/23, when he made 41 appearances with the Greens in a promotion-winning season. Having spent time with Bloomfield at Wycombe, he now joins him again, this time at Kenilworth Road.

**George Saville** is, in many ways, the heartbeat of the Luton team. He only arrived in the summer, but has quickly established himself in the centre of the Hatters' midfield. He is most associated with Millwall, for whom he played nearly 250 games, over four separate spells.

**Previous Meetings**
