The Knicks are beefing up their bench depth heading into next season and are turning to a former Celtics guard as one of their new pieces. Shams Charania of ESPN.com was first to report that New York has agreed to a one-year deal with Malcolm Brogdon to fill one of their final roster spots. This comes one day after the Knicks re-signed shooting guard Landry Shamet, putting the team’s roster count at 14. The Warriors were also rumored to have interest in Brogdon.
Brogdon, 32, played with the Wizards last season after the Blazers tried him away on draft night in June 2024. The high-scoring guard has battled injuries in recent years, suiting up for 24 games with the Wizards last season and only 39 games with the Blazers during the 2023-24 season.
Brogdon put up strong numbers when active though in Washington, averaging 12.7 points and 4.1 assists per game. Brogdon had a very successful single season in Boston during the 2022-23 season where he won Sixth Man of the Year award but the team opted to use him to help them land Jrue Holiday from the Blazers ahead of a 2023-24 title run.
With the Knicks, Brogdon is expected to have a rotation role under new coach Mike Brown backing up Jalen Brunson. New York has some work to do in order to fit in their new signings officially under the second apron hard cap.
The Knicks were just $3.7 million under the second apron before the Shamet and Brogdon deals were agreed to, meaning a minor cost-cutting move will be required for the team to bring aboard the two veterans. Otherwise, the Knicks will need to choose between keeping Brogdon and Shamet barring making a trade.
Brogdon joins former Celtics power forward Guerschon Yabusele as another offseason addition for the reworked Knicks second unit. The team is suddenly very deep in the backcourt with Jordan Clarkson, Miles McBride, Brogdon and Shamet all expected to be available options for New York off the bench. Garrison Matthews is also expected to compete for a roster spot during training camp.
Brogdon’s deal is non-guaranteed, according to Ian Begley of SNY.
