Revealed: Why £25 million midfielder left on loan

During a press conference today ahead of the away clash with Bournemouth, Fabian said that he was "confident" to let players leave the club either permanently or on loan due to the incomings of players over the summer.

Matt O'Riley was a player in the middle of various transfer links this summer, with Everton, Juventus, Napoli, Atalanta and Roma keen to sign the young Dane.

Hurzeler said at the end of August that he was "very confident" that O'Riley would stay at the Albion for the remainder of the season - to then announce that the 24-year-old would be sent out on a season-long loan to Marseille with ex-Albion head coch Roberto De Zerbi on September 2.

When asked about player loans at the press conference, Fabian said: “I always want to emphasise that all these kind of decisions, they are club decisions, and we do them together, so it's not only a decision from my side or from Tony [Bloom].

“It's always a decision we do together, we have a very open exchange, and therefore we always try to figure out what is the best for the club, we try to figure out what is the best for the team, what is the best for the individual player.

"Because in the end we had a big number, we had a big squad, so we have to make sure that we keep everyone happy."

Brighton confirmed they have signed the then 23-year-old from Celtic for an undisclosed fee reported to be a Scottish record £25 million.

The Denmark international, suffered an ankle injury right at the start of his Albion career in a Carabao Cup tie against fellow Sussex club Crawley Town on August 28 2024.

He then made his first of 23 appearances for the club in the Premier League against Manchester City in November 9 scoring on his debut to secure a 2-1 win at the Amex.

The Dane has only started 13 games in the league, scoring three goals and also assisting two.

The midfielder started two games in the Premier League this season, scoring against Fulham to give an early lead which was then nullified in the last minutes of the game by Muniz.

He was then dropped for the emphatic 2-1 win against Manchester City, and his loan announcement came shortly after.

Fabian added: “We also have to make sure that we can give everyone the right chance, the right possibility to be on the pitch, because if they're not playing, if they're not on the pitch, we can't give them enough attention and we develop them.

“We need to develop these young players, because they all have the potential, but they are not done yet, so we have to get the potential out of them, you only get the potential out of them if you give them time, if you put a lot of effort into them, that's the main thing.

“If it's too big [the squad] you can't do this in a very individualised way, that's why we have to make decisions, they might seem to be tough, but I think they were the best.”

Although O'Riley has been allowed to go out on loan due to Albion's strength in depth in midfield, head coach Fabian Hurzeler sees his long-term future at the Amex.

He said at the time, "Matt has the opportunity to challenge himself at the highest level in France and in the Champions League.

"We have a lot of competition in the midfield positions, and while we see Matt's long-term future here with us, this gives him the potential of more game time.

"We will monitor his progress throughout the season with Marseille, and we wish him well for the rest of the season."

With his departure, that leaves Hurzeler with a midfield of Carlos Baleba, Mats Wieffer, who is now not 100 per cent fit, Jack Hinshelwood, Yasin Ayari, Diego Gomez, James Milner, and Brajan Gruda.

Notable players on loan this season include: Evan Ferguson to Roma, Facundo Buonanotte to Chelsea and Igor to West Ham.
