Manchester United have been thanked by Sheffield Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen after they loaned highly-rated defender Harry Amass to the South Yorkshire club on deadline day.

The Owls are currently in crisis in the Championship with the club's owner Dejphon Chansiri cutting an unpopular figure at present. Wednesday are under a transfer embargo - and were blocked from completing deals that would add expenses on to their wage bill.

This has led to Pedersen having a threadbare squad to choose from - and without any realistic means of improving that situation. Wednesday could not sign any players permanently or on loan for a fee this summer and the same is in place for the next two transfer windows.

However, United were happy to send Amass to the South Yorkshire club as they wanted him to gain regular first-team football this campaign. United are believed to be footing the bill for his wages which allowed Wednesday to complete the transfer.

Speaking ahead of his team's Championship clash with Bristol City on Saturday, Pedersen thanked United for their help. "I think we have to be proud, and we have to be very thankful, because what they [United] have done for us is fantastic and big respect for what they have done," the manager told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"I'm proud because they could see that Sheffield Wednesday could be a good space and a good club for Harry and the trust they have in this direction, and on the other hand what that has done for us, it's a big respect, and thanks."

When asked if Amass was happy to have joined a club that is so clearly struggling - both on and off the pitch - Pedersen added: "He feels really well, when I speak with him and see him on the pitch, I see a concentrated and happy boy, who likes his new life in Sheffield and he's doing really well.

"You always have expectations before when you're choosing players, but it feels like he feels really well and I'm really happy that he's in." Wednesday only sit off the bottom of the Championship table owing to their arch rivals Sheffield United losing all of their opening four matches this season.

United have held no reservations in sending some of their younger players to the Championship previously. Radek Vitek could face Amass at Hillsborough this weekend having signed for Bristol City after agreeing a new contract at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, midfielder Toby Collyer is on loan at West Bromwich Albion. The biggest recent success story from a Championship loan came when Amad was loaned to Sunderland.

Upon his return, the Ivorian was thrust into the first team picture at United and has not looked back since.
