NBA Insider Gives Concerning Update on Mavericks' Anthony Davis

In addition to being without Kyrie Irving for the start of the 2025-26 NBA season, the Dallas Mavericks may also be without Anthony Davis.

Back in July, ESPN's Shams Charania announced that Davis underwent eye surgery to repair a detached retina.

Now, according to NBA insider Marc Stein, with the start of training camps right around the corner, Anthony Davis' status for the Mavericks' season opener is up in the air.

During Wednesday's episode of the "DLLS Dallas Mavericks Podcast," Stein revealed that Davis isn't fully back on the court yet.

"Based on everything I'm told, he's not fully back on the court yet, he can't be fully back on the court yet. So it's like, when practices start on September 30th, will AD even be ready to practice at that point? We don't know that yet.

"So it's not just the potential of starting the season without Kyrie. Is AD gonna be ready to go on opening night against San Antonio? I mean, October 22nd ain't that far away, so there are so many questions."

In addition to the eye injury sustained by the 10-time All-Star last season, Anthony Davis also notably dealt with an adductor injury that proved problematic both before and after the blockbuster trade between the Lakers and the Mavericks.

While he made his debut for Dallas on Feb. 8, racking up 26 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks in 31 minutes, Davis was ultimately forced to exit the game after re-aggravating the injury.

Despite that, he returned to action in late-March, playing eight more games late in the season before then suiting up for Dallas' play-in games against Sacramento and Memphis.

As the Mavericks look to bounce back from last season, if Davis winds up joining Kyrie Irving on the bench to start the year, it will be interesting to see how the team, and rookie standout Cooper Flagg, respond.
