The NFL season has just started, and the Washington Commanders are already dealing with a major setback. Last night, Commanders defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. suffered a devastating injury.
He wasn't the only one who got hurt during the game. Austin Ekeler, John Bates, and Noah Brown also went down with injuries.
The Commanders played the Green Bay Packers, losing 18-27. The injury occurred about halfway through the second quarter on a Packers extra-point attempt. Wise went down hard and stayed down as teammates quickly surrounded him.
Trainers placed a wrap on his left quad before he was carted off the field. Wise raised his hand to the crowd as fans applauded, but he was visibly emotional as players from both sidelines took a knee.
He was carted off the field and ruled out for the rest of the game. The injury was reported by ESPN as a quad injury, though the severity is still unclear.
"Scary: Commanders DL Deatrich Wise Jr. went down on the field after the Packers' extra point. He's being carted off now and was face down with players around him. Appears to be a leg injury," reporter Arye Pull wrote on X.
Following the game, head coach Dan Quinn said after the game that Wise will undergo further testing this week.
"It was a tough game from an injury standpoint," Quinn said in the postgame press conference. "I don't want to just speculate and see where we're at."
Wise, 31, signed a one-year deal with the Commanders this offseason after spending his first eight seasons with the New England Patriots. He had started both of the Commanders' opening games.
