Opinion: Ange Postecoglou's Nottingham Forest tactics could unearth an unlikely hero this season

Ange Postecoglou’s tactics differ immensely from Nuno Espirito Santo’s and that has left fans wondering which players could struggle under the Australian.

While some of the heroes under Nuno such as Nikola Milenkovic may find it hard to adapt to Ange’s style, there are others who could make a name for themselves.

There are a lot of new signings at the City Ground who are ready to try to force their way into the head coach’s plans.

One of those signings is Oleksandr Zinchenko, and his skillset could mean he becomes one of the club’s most important players.

Oleksandr Zinchenko could shine as Nottingham Forest left-back under Ange Postecoglou

Throughout his years as a manager, Ange Postecoglou has frequently used inverted fullbacks.

He used them at Celtic and Tottenham Hotspur, so if he is to keep to his style of play, the likelihood is that he will use them at Forest as well.

New signing Oleksandr Zinchenko is familiar with this role, having played it throughout his time at Arsenal, and Postecoglou could turn to the Ukrainian this season.

Current left-back Neco Williams typically hugs the touchline on both ends of the pitch, and has limited experience of playing in a central role.

This could open the pathway for Zinchenko to become a regular feature in the starting XI over the Welshman.

The 28-year-old is a Champions League winner, and the quality he possesses could go a long way in any success Nottingham Forest have this season.

His familiarity as an inverted fullback could start to worry Williams, although it would be harsh to bench him.

It will be hard to drop Neco Williams at Nottingham Forest

Neco Williams has been excellent for Nottingham Forest throughout his time at the club.

Dropping him would be a hard decision, and not one Ange will take lightly.

However, with Ola Aina out injured for three months, Williams could return to the right-side of the pitch where he started his career, but he would still have to learn to invert, if Ange persist with his tactics.

Ange’s former assistant admitted the Australian makes small changes to his style, so perhaps this time round the 60-year-old decides against inverting his wide defenders.

Time will tell how Nottingham Forest look under Postecoglou, but if it is anything like how he played at Tottenham and Celtic, Neco Williams could be worried about his spot in the team.
