Henrik Pedersen, the Sheffield Wednesday manager, has praised Harry Amass before his official debut, despite Rúben Amorim’s decision on the left-back.
Harry Amass is a promising Manchester United left-back who loves to get forward and support the attack whenever he can, making him a perfect profile for Rúben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation.
The former Watford youth player made seven appearances for United’s first team last season and has been loaned to Championship side Sheffield Wednesday for the 2025/26 season.
Amorim made the decision to include Diego Leon on the pre-season tour of the United States, rather than Amass. The new signing will stay at Old Trafford until January at the earliest, but he has yet to make his debut.
In truth, the loan move, which United covered the entire finances, due to Wednesday’s difficulties, will help Amass develop further, but he won’t be happy with Amorim’s decision to pick Leon ahead of him.
Pedersen describes Amass as “fantastic”
While Amass hasn’t made his debut for Sheffield Wednesday yet, he looks set to be involved this weekend as the Owls take on Radek Vitek’s Bristol City.
Speaking to Joe Crann of the Sheffield Star ahead of the Championship tie, Henrik Pedersen – the Wednesday manager – spoke about Amass’ time at the club so far, and what he thought of the young full-back.
“Harry is fantastic,” said Pedersen. “Since I spoke with him first time and his hunger to come to this football club, because he also knows the story of this football club.
“He also has seen us, and he wants to be a part of this; that he wants to be an important part of this is fantastic.
“And how Harry has been in the (training) session and how open-minded he has been, how positive he has been and how constructive he has been. Yeah, it’s been great to have him as a part of the team.”
“Because we’re Sheffield Wednesday…”

What is the plan with Amass?
While Amass is undoubtedly a talented footballer, the Leon signing puts his United future in question, as Amorim won’t need the two young left-backs and Patrick Dorgu, who is just 20 years old himself.

The sensible option would be to see how Amass develops this season, then loan Leon next season to a similar level. Then by the end of the 2026/27 season, Amorim will have to make a firm decision on his left-backs.
By that time, Dante Plunkett and Bendito Mantato will also be pushing for a first-team spot, although Mantato is more likely to play on the right side, due to his experience as both a left-back and right-winger.
For now, Amass needs to prove Amorim wrong and show that he won’t be bullied in a physical league, as that is the main concern at present. His technical ability is already at a very good level.
