Manchester United could push for another goalkeeper when the transfer window reopens in January. According to a report from Fichajes, the Red Devils could reignite their pursuit of Aston Villa star Emiliano Martinez if Senne Lammens fails to cement himself as their new number one.
Martinez has been part of the Aston Villa setup since the summer of 2020. He has been one of their standout performers over the years. The Birmingham-based club have taken giant strides under Unai Emery, and the Argentine shot-stopper has played a big part in that.
While he still has four years left on his deal, the 2022 World Cup winner was keen on making a move away this summer. He was pushing for an exit and was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United.
The Red Devils could have secured his services on deadline day as they already had the green light from the player’s end. Martinez was waiting for a call from Old Trafford, but it didn’t arrive, as they ended up signing Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp in a deal worth around €21 million.
The 23-year-old is now expected to be their number one going forward. Despite having signed Lammens, United still remain keen on Martinez. They could revive their pursuit of the Argentine international depending on their new goalkeeper’s performances.
Martinez could still move to Old Trafford
Meanwhile, Martinez could be available for a transfer in January, as he seems to have lost his place in the team due to the ongoing transfer saga. With the World Cup approaching, he won’t want to sit on the sidelines and could push harder for an exit at the turn of the calendar.
If Lammens fails to establish himself as United’s new number one, the Red Devils could once again enter the market for a goalkeeper. While the 23-year-old Belgian is considered a huge talent, there will be a lot of pressure on him going forward.
The next four months will determine whether United make another attempt to sign Martinez. The 33-year-old is likely to cost around €25 million. While it is a significant investment, Amorim won’t hesitate if he feels the need for an experienced campaigner in goal.
