The Eagles will be without one of the top playmakers for Sunday’s Super Bowl rematch against the Chiefs.
Tight end Dallas Goedert has been ruled out with a knee injury for this weekend’s high-profile game, the Eagles announced on Friday.
Goedert did not practice this week, so the news should come as no surprise. Still, it’s a blow for the Eagles’ offense.
Without Goedert, the Eagles’ top tight ends are Grant Calcaterra and Kylen Granson. Calcaterra, the fourth-year player out of SMU who put together an impressive preseason, will likely take on a larger role.
The Eagles could also opt to run more 11 personnel, focusing on getting the ball to wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith in the passing game when Jalen Hurts isn’t handing it off to Saquon Barkley.
Goedert shined in last Thursday’s season opener against the Cowboys. His seven receptions led all Eagles players in their 24-20 win. Dallas’ coverage plan made it a point to neutralize Brown and Smith, leaving Goedert open.
Injuries have hampered Goedert’s career since being a second-round draft pick in 2018. Last season, he missed seven games; the Eagles, notably, went 6-1 in those games.
Goedert was hoping for an injury-free 2025 season, which could be his last in Philly. The Eagles were considering trading Goedert this offseason, per reports. Instead, he agreed to a restructured one-year deal in May.
We’ll see how long Goedert is out for — and if he can return in time for Week 3 against the Los Angeles Rams.
