Seahawks CB Devon Witherspoon doubtful vs Steelers

The Seattle Seahawks will likely be without two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Devon Witherspoon for Sunday’s Week 2 road matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Seahawks listed Witherspoon (knee) as doubtful on Friday’s injury report. They also ruled out rookie safety Nick Emmanwori (ankle), which was expected after head coach Mike Macdonald said earlier this week that the team was considering placing him on injured reserve.

Those were the only two players with game status designations. That indicates safety Julian Love (groin) and defensive tackle Jarran Reed (back) are both on track to play after sitting out Thursday’s practice. That also indicates edge rusher Uchenna Nwosu (knee), wide receiver Jake Bobo (concussion) and wide receiver Dareke Young (hamstring) are on track to play after missing Week 1.

Witherspoon played every defensive snap of Seattle’s season-opening loss to the San Francisco 49ers this past Sunday, but appeared to get hurt midway through the fourth quarter when he collided with safety Coby Bryant on Josh Jobe’s interception. Witherspoon didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday. Friday’s practice report has yet to be released.

Emmanwori suffered a high-ankle sprain on the opening series against the 49ers after bringing down star running back Christian McCaffrey on a tackle for loss. Macdonald said Monday that Emmanwori was “under consideration” for an IR stint, which would require him to miss at least four games.

The Seahawks addressed their cornerback depth on Thursday by signing veteran Shaquill Griffin from their practice squad to their 53-man roster.
