Arsenal ran out 3-1 winners against West Ham as Renée Slegers' team continued their perfect start to the season, ensuring that they will be keeping pace with their fellow title contenders this gameweek.
As they did in their opening game of the season against the London City Lionesses, the Gunners initially went behind as Shekiera Martinez's cross caused problems for Daphne van Domselaar, who ended up putting the ball in her own net.
Frida Maanum would ensure that her side did not go into the interval behind before goals from Stina Blackstenius and Caitlin Foord put Arsenal in charge.
Alessia Russo also got her name on the scoresheet, grabbing a brace late on with her second coming from a spot-kick after Olivia Smith was brought down in the box.
Story of the match
The match could not have started much worse for Arsenal as Daphne van Domselaar made a critical error that led to West Ham taking a very early lead in proceedings. Shekiera Martinez put in what initially looked like a poor cross into the box. However, it became apparent that this ball was going to trouble Arsenal's goalkeeper.
The 25-year-old rose to collect the cross, but failed to grasp it as the ball slipped out of her grip, deflected off the post, back onto her hand and into the back of the net. It was a catastrophic moment for van Domselaar, who would have been left hoping that this moment would not cost her team valuable points in the title race.
As expected, Arsenal would very quickly gain the ascendancy following the goal, enjoying a much larger share of possession than their opponents. The Gunners were starting to create opportunities in dangerous areas, but were failing to hit the target. This was until the 20th minute at least, when a well-worked sequence of passes left the ball at the feet of Frida Maanum.
The Norwegian slotted the ball under Megan Walsh, who simply could not get down fast enough to deny Arsenal the equaliser as the Hammers' lead had now been cancelled out.
West Ham refused to fold after this goal, still providing resistance to Arsenal's attacks and not allowing them into the positions that they would have liked to be in.
The teams would go into half-time level, with Arsenal certainly being the more frustrated of the two sides at the interval. Renée Slegers wasted no time in changing personnel as goalscorer Maanum made way for Stina Blackstenius ahead of the second half.
It did not take long for this substitution to impact the match as the Swede gave the Gunners the lead just seven minutes into the second half. Alessia Russo laid the ball off wonderfully for the striker, who calmly placed her effort into the bottom left corner, well out of the reach of Walsh.
From this point forward, Arsenal pushed on as they began to box the hosts into their own half as they continued to hunt for a second goal that would likely spell the end of the contest. They got their reward just ten minutes after Blackstenius' goal. Caitlin Foord's header from a corner flew into the back of the net at some pace.
Corners were proving to be a weak point for West Ham as Arsenal began to expose this defensive frailty. The Gunners came very close to finding the back of the net once more from the set-piece as Stina Blackstenius came very close to getting her brace in this match.
West Ham looked defeated after Foord's goal, but that was not enough for Arsenal, who added another to their tally to close out the match. Alessia Russo unleashed a venomous strike into the top right corner, leaving Walsh completely helpless.
Soon after this, Olivia Smith won a penalty for the Gunners. Russo coolly converted as West Ham's night ended in the worst of ways, with two late goals that made the result look much worse than it had done a few minutes prior.
The Swede did exactly what was asked of her when she was brought on at half-time, and that was causing the West Ham defence more problems as they were not tested enough in the opening 45 minutes.
She not only did this to a very high level, but also provided an instant impact for her side, finding the back of the net to give her side the lead and turn the momentum in favour of the Gunners.
Following her goal, Arsenal had near total control of proceedings. A lot of this can be credited to Blackstenius, who turned the tables very early in the second half.
Although Russo will get a lot of the credit for the assist and her two late goals, there is no denying that Blackstenius' goal provided a big turning point in the game.
