Unai Emery: I can make Jadon Sancho's World Cup dream come true

Sancho will spend the season under the Spaniard’s guidance after arriving on a deadline day loan move from Manchester United.

The 25-year-old has struggled for consistency since joining United from Borussia Dortmund for £73million in 2021, with his last appearance for the Three Lions coming in that summer’s Euro 2020 final.

But Emery reckons he will be able to get Sancho, frozen out at Old Trafford by Ruben Amorim, back on track and once more part of the international set-up.

Asked whether it was realistic for Sancho to get back in the England squad this season, Emery replied: “Yes, of course, this is my objective, to get him back to his best - and if he does that then he’ll come back to the national team.

“Every player wants to be part of the national team.”

Emery believes Sancho can offer Villa a threat on both flanks, though the manager noted it was on the right wing the Manchester City academy product enjoyed the most success with Dortmund.

“When he was in Borussia Dortmund, he performed fantastic,” said the Villa boss.

“And he played with the national team 25 matches, more or less. Of course, he's still young.

“He's still being hungry to show his capacity to play with his skills, his qualities, and hopefully we can exploit here again his best."

Sancho is unlikely to start for Villa at Everton on Saturday, with Emery admitting he will require time to get up to speed after spending his final weeks with United training on his own.

Defender Victor Lindelof, a free agent signing, is also building up his fitness with Harvey Elliott the only one of Villa’s deadline day signings in contention to make the XI at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Villa are aiming to kickstart their campaign, having taken just one point from their opening three matches but after a frustrating transfer window, where they were restricted by financial fair play rules, Emery is happy with the depth of the squad at his disposal.

“I am positive, I am confident, I believe,” he said. “Everything I have to set through our hard work, our commitment.

“Now is the moment I am again feeling stronger and feeling confident because we have again possibilities with the players to select one or another, with the players on the bench who can have an impact.

“This is really important. We struggled last year, like this year. There weren’t enough players to compete.

“Last season the first half we did not have all players ready to play, not enough competing in the XI like we need. The second half, wow. When we had enough players in the XI, on the bench, we are performing collectively so, so good. I feel we have enough players to compete in each match.”
