Rúben Amorim has to play“outstanding”Manchester United star in front three vs Manchester City

Rúben Amorim has a difficult choice ahead of the derby: who should start in the front three after the injury news in the pre-match press conference?

Speaking to the media ahead of the Manchester derby this Sunday, Rúben Amorim confirmed that Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount will both be absent through injury.

The two attacking midfielders have started all three Premier League matches so far this season, and will be a big miss to Amorim against Pep Guardiola’s side.

In the press conference, Amorim didn’t give anything away as to who could start in their place, although Manchester United fans will have an eye on who they think could play.

Benjamin Šeško and Joshua Zirkzee will be fighting for the centre forward place, but Amorim will need a reshuffle for the attacking midfielder.

Fernandes has to play higher against City

Bruno Fernandes has played all three Premier League games alongside Casemiro in the double pivot, despite usually playing better as an attacking midfielder.

Against Manchester City, Fernandes – who was recently described as “outstanding” – should be moved back to his former role as the left-sided attacking midfielder, with Bryan Mbeumo on the right side.

The two No.10s will play behind Šeško to form a very dynamic front three that will excel on the counterattack, should they need to.

Kobbie Mainoo can take Fernandes’ midfield in midfield, while Patrick Dorgu can come in for the injured Diogo Dalot on the left-hand side.

With Amad on the right and Dorgu on the left, Šeško should be ready to put on a plate for his first goal, as both wing-backs can cross to great success.

The Mazraoui decision must be made

Noussair Mazraoui returned to the pitch in United’s win against Burnley, impressing many with his quick feet and link play, reminding fans what they have been missing in his absence.

In Amorim’s formation, Mazraoui usually plays as right centre-back – but Leny Yoro will almost definitely keep his place – or a right-wing-back.

However, his cameo against Burnley may not be enough to earn him a starting place in the side, even though he suits the more defensive approach that Amorim may want to go with.

If Amorim does want to start Mazraoui, Amad could be dropped or moved into the higher positions, with Fernandes remaining in the double pivot. It’s a tough call.
