Have West Ham fans been too harsh on Bowen’s captaincy? Potter thinks so

**Graham Potter pushes back against claims that West Ham need a change of captain.**

Until recently, one thing West Ham had in abundance was leaders. Across the pitch there were players that would rally the others.

However, it’s something that has been lost over the past couple of years, and there’s very few players who you could describe as leaders.

Captain Jarrod Bowen has come under scrutiny by some fans, with them not believing he’s the right man for the job. Manager Graham Potter though couldn’t disagree more.

“I mean, he’s a goal threat. That’s what Jarrod is. His finish against Forest was very high level, it’s incredible. The way he takes it so early, his movement, he’s a killer around the box,” he said.

“He’s also been a fantastic captain, a great leader. He’s been a dream to work with, to be honest. Everyone knows how important he is to us.”

Bowen loves the club like no other senior player does. He’s vocal, he’s likeable, and he leads by example. In my opinion, there’s no better option for the role. If you’re wanting an ambassador for the club, similar to that of Mark Noble, Bowen is your man.

For me, the issue isn’t the captain, it’s the fact that he’s one of very few players at the club that have leadership qualities. When you’ve not got defenders who will go to war, midfielders who will die for the badge, and a general lack of care for the club, of course things won’t go well.
