Green Bay Packers fans have heard their share of Romeo Doubs trade rumors over the past six months-plus. There was a time when some would have favored re-routing the at times problematic receiver. Entering the season, though, that script had flipped – the fanbase is sick and tired of rehashed gossip.
Sure, the team drafted Matthew Golden and signed Christian Watson to an extension. That doesn’t mean Doubs has lost his place in the receiver room.
Quite the contrary. After Jayden Reed’s injury, he is the clear-cut WR1 the offense will lean on for consistent production in the pass game.
Packers aren’t about to part with one of Love’s top targets
Through two games, Doubs has not racked up eye-popping numbers: five catches, 96 yards, a touchdown. But his nine targets are second on the team and the most among receivers: tight end Tucker Kraft stole the show from everyone on Thursday.

Despite Doubs’ past problems holding onto the football, Jordan Love clearly views him as something of a security blanket. He does not have blazing speed off the line of scrimmage, but he is a consistent target in underneath routes and can turn it up after the catch.
Even as Kraft took over, it was Doubs who first got the Packers onto the TNF scoreboard with a 5-yard reception on Green Bay’s second drive of the game.
The opening drive, of course, was when disaster struck in the form of Reed’s broken collarbone. Heading into the season, Reed was the closest thing to a WR1 in a balanced Packers receiving corps. He did not take the sophomore leap Green Bay hoped for, but he still led the team in catches and receiving yards last season.
Playing through a foot fracture, however, Reed was limited to 18 snaps in Week 1. Thanks to coming up with two chunk plays, Doubs topped Packers passcatchers with 68 yards against the Lions. In both games, a dominant defensive showing allowed the offense to work the clock later, relying less on the passing attack. Except for Kraft, no one has put up noteworthy numbers; in other words, reading the box scores would do little to reveal a definitive leader among Green Bay receivers.

The Minnesota Vikings beat the Green Bay Packers 27-25.
With Reed hampered by his prior injury, one could argue that the WR1 discussion was already as murky as ever. Was it Reed? Was it Doubs? Could Golden seize the title midseason?
While he hasn’t stuffed the stat sheet, Doubs has already asserted himself this year as Love’s reliable veteran option while Golden has struggled to forge a strong connection just yet. With Reed gone, Doubs clearly takes his place as the top target on the field.
Obviously the context is not ideal – no Reed, no Christian Watson – but in year four, Doubs has a major opportunity to put up career-highs across the board. His 59 receptions, 674 yards, and 8 TDs of two seasons ago are his best to date.

Bottom line: Doubs isn’t going anywhere. Super Bowl contenders don’t trade their No. 1 receivers. If any of those rumors ever had credence, they definitely don’t matter now. Under contract through 2026, he will almost surely finish the season in the Green and Gold. No “Doubs” about it.
