For one thing, when they stay quiet, it makes the job a darn sight harder.
It does feel fair to ponder, however, just what was gained from Jeff Shi’s post-transfer window debrief last week?
On the one hand, Wolves’ executive chairman deserves credit for fronting up. Shi is not daft and neither is he deaf. He must realise, by now, he isn’t the most popular figure among supporters. It takes a bit of courage, in those circumstances, to stick your head above the parapet.
Praise too must go to the Wolves’ media team, for asking just about the toughest set of questions you are likely to see in an in-house production. It’s difficult to think of a topic which was avoided. In terms of transparency and attempting to explain why certain things worked out the way they did this summer, it is ten-out-of-ten.
The trouble in Shi’s case is the majority of supporters have long stopped listening. Such is the apathy which exists toward him, one suspects he could have taken off his glasses and ripped his shirt open mid-interview to reveal he was Superman and no-one would have batted an eyelid. It is actions, not words, the fans now crave.
The other, more intrinsic issue with post-window assessments is they inevitably come far too early.
Shi might have rated Wolves’ business as “good” but it will take months, if not years, to discover whether he was right.
