Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim tipped to be replaced by ex-Burnley coach after owner rumours

Manchester United are hoping to seize the opportunity to build on their momentum by securing a second consecutive victory in their derby showdown against local rivals Manchester City this weekend. Ruben Amorim's squad entered the international break on a high note, having clinched a hard-fought 3-2 victory at home against Burnley. However, they now face a stern challenge away at the Etihad - although Pep Guardiola's side have demonstrated their own weaknesses.

City have suffered two defeats in their first three matches this season and are feeling the heat going into this game, which they cannot afford to lose if they wish to stay in contention with Arsenal and Liverpool. United triumphed in this fixture last season with a 2-1 win away from home - marking Amorim's second victory over Guardiola in the 2024-25 campaign - so the Portuguese manager will be reasonably confident of achieving a positive outcome.

Here, Express Sport brings you all the latest news concerning United...

Sean Dyche tipped to replace Ruben Amorim

Amorim could face intense scrutiny if he continues to deliver disappointing results this season after leading the team to a 15th-place finish last season.

United only managed one win under the Portuguese head coach in the 2025-26 season and the club's top brass will expect him to start producing more favourable outcomes soon.

Should Amorim be shown the door in the future, a host of high-profile managers would likely be linked with the vacancy - including former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane, who has been consistently rumoured to be in the running in recent years.

However, former Burnley, Southampton and QPR striker Charlie Austin has put forward a more surprising suggestion and backed his ex-Clarets manager Sean Dyche for the position.

He revealed that Zidane would be his top choice, but if unavailable he'd select Dyche because he would provide the team with "structure".

"I think he's got to go, if it's my decision, I'm going after Zinedine Zidane," he said. "Ultimately, there are a different set of managers that you've got to be looking at, because the situation Manchester United are in, I would take Zidane but is he the right man for the job and how we see them, probably not.

"In my honest opinion, you have to look at the job Sean Dyche did at Burnley, what he did at Everton. For me, he stabilised the club, at least he's going to put structure in there.

"Zidane is the top of the tree for me, but what the club needs now is structure because that is something they do not have. I know Manchester United fans will look at me saying, 'he said Sean Dyche', no, they need structure [and] that is a man who will come in and make the team a lot better than what we are all seeing."

Andre Onana celebrates Trabzonspor reception

Amorim is aware he won't have Onana available for this weekend's fixture after the Cameroonian goalkeeper secured a loan switch to Turkish side Trabzonspor, with no loan fee or purchase obligation attached to the arrangement.

United brought in young keeper Senne Lammens on transfer deadline day and he is now anticipated to become the club's new first choice. Onana endured intense scrutiny during his stint at Old Trafford following a string of blunders, including several during the club's embarrassing Carabao Cup elimination to League Two outfit Grimsby

The goalkeeper seemed to aim a dig at United following his warm reception from thousands of Trabzonspor supporters this week, confessing he had "never felt so much love from people around me".

"I am very happy. I can say that I am very happy," Onana told local outlet 61 Saat. "I am starting a new project, a new adventure for me, I am very happy to be here. This is a feeling that makes me so happy. I've never felt so much love from people around me.

"It's a wonderful feeling to be made to feel at home from the very first moment. I want to start working as soon as possible and reciprocate that love by making them happy on the field."

Tiger Woods would be 'brilliant' as United owner

United supporters have been demanding ownership changes for years after growing frustrated with the Glazers' stewardship of the club. Sir Jim Ratcliffe has subsequently arrived, though he has yet to persuade fans he can restore the glory days to Old Trafford.

Whilst the Glazers haven't enjoyed popularity in Manchester, several American-based entrepreneurs have achieved success investing in football clubs after actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney guided Wrexham from non-league to the Championship. Birmingham are also experiencing a revival since NFL legend Tom Brady acquired the club.

Golfing legend Woods has been suggested to pursue a similar football acquisition by ex-Blackburn player Matt Jansen, encouraging him to invest at United.

Former Rovers goalkeeper Brad Friedel concurred that Woods would prove a tremendous addition to United should he choose the ownership path, but implored him to reject United and instead join his previous club Liverpool.

"I saw Matt Jansen say he'd like Tiger Woods to take over Man United," Friedel told Mr-gamble.com. "I would prefer he does not go to Old Trafford. But it would be brilliant for the Premier League if he did. Go to Liverpool instead, Tiger!"
