Since Gianluigi Donnarumma joined Manchester City, the Italian press has tried to convince everyone that the goalkeeper is capable on the ball, and was incredibly unfortunate to be sold by Paris Saint-Germain.
The 26-year-old showed his weaknesses in possession in Italy’s 5-4 win over Israel and it wasn’t the first time that those problems were seen in a major game.
Despite this, PSG manager Luis Enrique’s decision to sell the goalkeeper continues to face criticism in Italy.
Former Napoli player Faouzi Ghoulam spoke to [Corriere dello Sport](https://www.corrieredellosport.it/news/calcio/2025/09/11-143069559/ghoulam_esclusivo_city-napoli_nel_destino_e_sul_futuro_) this week and was asked about the Manchester City player.
The left-back believes that PSG disrespected Donnarumma by selling him.
_“PSG made a glaring mistake and disrespected Gigio. They wanted to please Luis Enrique because he won, but you can’t do this to a totemic player, decisive for the victories themselves._
_“Gigio is among the two or three best goalkeepers in the world and will be among the top ten for the Ballon d’Or, but what would have happened if Guardiola hadn’t arrived?”_
The 34-year-old suggested that Manchester City signing Donnarumma is a sign of his good abilities in possession.
_“Chevalier is very good, but I wonder if Gigio hadn’t really been as good with his feet as people say, enough to make PSG change, would someone like Pep have signed him? This excuse makes no sense.”_
The left-back had more criticism for PSG’s decision.
_“I also live in Paris and I know stories and people. I know how much he was loved and respected by his teammates and the people. I can’t explain it because it’s an inexplicable choice. A stupid thing.”_
The frustration is easy to understand because Donnarumma was key to PSG’s Champions League win. Enrique is known to have made several similar decisions previously in his career solely for his system and Donnarumma’s weaknesses have been obvious since his time at AC Milan.
Besides that, he was weighing heavily on PSG’s wage bill and letting him go also made financial sense for the French giants.
Donnarumma could make his debut for Manchester City in the Manchester derby at the weekend.
