Exclusive: Newcastle United rejected chance to sign Man City star to retain Tino Livramento

TBR Football understands that Rico Lewis was discussed in a potential deal for Tino Livramento earlier this summer.

Lewis has recently signed a new five-year contract at Manchester City, but TBR Football revealed that only came about after talks over his future with Pep Guardiola.

Lewis had been considering his future at Man City, as Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, Brighton, Tottenham, and Everton all showed interest in signing him, including City legend Vincent Kompany at Bayern Munich.

While Man City ultimately got Lewis to pen a new deal at the Etihad Stadium, his name also came up during their approach for Livramento, TBR Football can confirm.

Newcastle United were offered Rico Lewis as part of a Tino Livramento deal

TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey says that Lewis’ name was mentioned when City were attempting to sign the Newcastle defender, but it didn’t lead to anything.

TBR Football revealed in July that Man City wanted to sign Livramento, but the Magpies were firm on their stance regarding the former Chelsea man.

Lewis’ name was mentioned in the early talks, which could have seen the 20-year-old move in the opposite direction to Livramento if a deal had been agreed upon.

Now, following talks with Pep Guardiola, Lewis has put pen to paper on a new long-term deal.

“I have spent so much of my life at this club. City means everything to me, so to be able to stay longer makes me incredibly happy,” Lewis told City’s website.

“I am still improving and developing as a player, and I know that the opportunity to carry on working with Pep [Guardiola], his coaching team, and our amazing squad will only help me to keep getting better.”

Rico Lewis has been a regular feature for Man City this season

Man City might have been willing to let Lewis leave earlier in the summer to try and sign Livramento, but Guardiola has quickly shown how much he trusts him since then.

Lewis has played in all three Premier League games this season, starting two and appearing as a substitute against Brighton and Hove Albion.

It is clear that Guardiola trusts Lewis a lot, and he has rewarded that by picking up an assist in their only win so far this season against Wolves.

Now that he has signed a five-year contract, Lewis has committed his long-term future to the football club, with the focus now being on remaining a regular within the team.

“I will give everything to try and help us look to achieve more success both this season and beyond.”
