The 35-year-old was left out of Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions squad for the September double header against Andorra and Serbia.

Instead, Reece James, Djed Spence and Tino Livramento were all preferred ahead of him – while Real Madrid’s Trent Alexander-Arnold was also omitted.

With the World Cup only 10 months away, time is not on Walker’s side if he wants to get back in the England reckoning.

But with 96 caps to his name, Parker insists Walker still has a burning desire to represent his country – something that were part of the conversations when the full-back was deciding which club to sign for following his Manchester City departure.

The Clarets boss told the Burnley Express: “There were definitely conversations with Kyle about his aspirations and him being in and around the England squad and how it’s still a driver for him. It's still something that he wants to definitely do.

"The decision was made this break to obviously not include him and I had a little chat with him regarding that. But I'm absolutely under no illusions from speaking to Kyle that it's a driving ambition for him to get into that squad.”
