Manchester City doubted by Italian media – Fighting talk ahead of Champions League match

The Italian press is taking a close look at Manchester City ahead of their Champions League opener against Napoli, and the tone is far from intimidating.

According to [**Sport Mediaset**](https://www.sportmediaset.mediaset.it/calcio/championsleague/napoli-questo-city-fa-meno-paura-un-cantiere-aperto-con-le-solite-amnesie-difensive_103389028-202502k.shtml?ver=196000000), Guardiola’s side is still “a work in progress”, with the first three league games yielding just three points, thanks to defeats against Tottenham and Brighton.

The newspaper underlined that this City side looks “a distant relative of the one admired until 2024”, still carrying the flaws that undermined last season’s campaign, especially in defence.

The absence of stability at the back remains a talking point, with Ruben Dias and John Stones described as vulnerable when facing quick transitions.

The piece also suggested Napoli could capitalise if they remain compact and strike vertically, as “those sudden vertical attacks are exactly what can split in two the English rearguard”.

Even with Rodri back from injury and Haaland maintaining his usual efficiency in front of goal, the Italian outlet sees Guardiola struggling to find the right balance.

Key absences such as Rayan Cherki and Marmoush were noted, while Savinho and Doku are still considered short of delivering consistently in the final third.

The decision to loan Jack Grealish was even put into question, with Corriere dello Sport pointing out that the winger is “reborn at Everton”, already providing four assists and winning the Premier League’s August Player of the Month award.

Between tactical uncertainty, defensive frailty and lingering injuries, Italian media believe this City side offers Napoli an opening.

As the report concluded, the Etihad may celebrate the return of Kevin De Bruyne, but the real party could be spoiled on the pitch if Conte’s men seize their chance.
