Aston Villa may be forced to cash in on one of their key players next summer.
After a whirlwind of a summer transfer window, talks are already shifting to what lies ahead in January and beyond.
Aston Villa saw a number of players leave the club over the summer, including Academy product Jacob Ramsey, who was reluctantly sold to balance the teetering Financial Fair Play scales.
Ramsey made the switch to Premier League rivals Newcastle United, for an initial fee of £39 million. The Villans also received a high volume of interest in Morgan Rogers but were able to keep him at the club beyond the deadline.
However, they still run the risk of losing Rogers, as rival clubs continue to circle like sharks.
Premier League interest in Morgan Rogers
Aston Villa worked hard to sign Rogers from Middlesbrough just last year. After rejecting three bids from Unai Emery’s side, Boro finally accepted an initial £8 million offer in January 2024.
He has since become a key player for Villa and missed just one Premier League game last season due to a yellow card suspension. Rogers notched 14 goals and 16 assists in all competitions throughout the 2024/25 term, while consistently showcasing his versatility by operating on both wings and in midfield when necessary.
Over the summer, Rogers naturally attracted plenty of interest, with Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur all linked with him in recent months. His market value has also skyrocketed thanks to his impressive performances, with reports claiming an offer of £70-80 million could be enough to convince Villa to sell up.
Aston Villa ‘could be forced’ to sell Morgan Rogers
While the transfer market is now closed for business until the new year, clubs are still exploring targets in anticipation and the interest in Rogers is still lingering.
A January move seems unlikely, as Villa will be reluctant to sell any key player halfway through the season and Rogers himself will be looking for all the regular minutes he can get. The 23-year-old will also be working hard to get himself a place in the England squad for the 2026 World Cup.
The summer could be a totally different ball game, though. According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, ‘a lot’ of clubs are expected to still be monitoring Rogers, especially if Villa’s FFP issues remain.
“Aston Villa did everything they could to make sure he didn’t have to be sold in the summer as part of the PSR and FFP issues they were struggling with.
“The price tag and everything else ensured there was no deal to be done in the summer, and nothing will happen in January. But it will be interesting to watch next summer, it could depend on where Villa are at with regard to PSR and what type of season they have.
“If those concerns are still there for Villa, then we could see them potentially forced to sell players and Rogers, of course, could be one of those because of the interest in him.”
