Nottingham Forest fell to defeat against Arsenal in the Premier League this afternoon.

A Martin Zubimendi brace and another from Viktor Gyökeres secured the win for the home side in Ange Postecoglou’s first game in charge of the Reds, after just two days of training with the full squad since his arrival on Trentside.

Forest travel to Swansea City in the third round of the Carabao Cup later this week, when Ange will have enjoyed more time with the squad on the training ground.

Forest defended resolutely throughout the first half in north London, keeping the Gunners at bay in the opening stages.

Matz Sels was quick to react to deny Mikel Merino after a scramble following an Arsenal corner, before the home side struck just after the half-hour mark.

After clearing a corner, the ball dropped to Zubimendi, whose first-time drive had enough pace to beat Sels and give the Gunners the advantage.

The midfielder almost repeated the trick moments later, when his dipping effort went just over the Forest crossbar.

As the half drew to a close, Ange Postecoglou’s side enjoyed possession around the edge of the home side’s box before a clever one-two between Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood gave the Forest No.10 a chance to fire at goal, but his effort drifted just wide of David Raya’s post.

Half-time: Arsenal 1-0 Forest

With the second half barely a minute old, the home side doubled their advantage when Gyökeres tapped the ball into the net from Eberechi Eze’s low cross.

Forest struck the crossbar in their hunt for a way back into the contest, as did Gyökeres at the other end of the pitch.

With time running down at the Emirates, the home side rounded off the scoring when Zubimendi headed home his second of the match.

Forest are back in action on Wednesday, when the Reds travel to Swansea in the Carabao Cup.
