Hansi Flick explains ‘egos kill success’ quote as Barcelona boss sends out strong message to…

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick caused quite the stir when he said a couple of weeks ago that “egos kill success” and that his Barça team needed to get back to what they were last season, when the boss felt they played as “one unit”.

Several Barça players were asked about the quote in the following days, [including Lamine Yamal](/barcelona-la-liga/100139/lamine-yamal-responds-to-hansi-flicks-ego-warning-at-barcelona), and it was only a matter of time before the coach was asked about the matter again. That happened in a press conference on Saturday, and Hansi elaborated on what he meant.

> “There are things that happen on the pitch or in the dressing room and it’s my job to solve them. I want everyone to be team-focused and to know what they have to do. The difference between good players and very good ones is that they know how to solve mistakes, be in the right place... If you think about today, maybe we played 50-60%. That’s what I want to instill in the players. Everyone deserves 100% of the players. That’s why last season came the victories and the titles and we have to get back to it.”

There is nothing wrong or controversial about what Flick said, and it was simply a warning about not being complacent after achieving so much success last season. Barça were so good because they checked their egos at the door and played with each other, for each other. They were not quite on the same page in the first month of the season, and as Flick himself said, it’s the coach’s job to get his players back on track.
