“He’ll be in demand” – NT coach explains what he told Manchester United outcast, backed transfer idea

Andre Onana was right to get out of Manchester United and move to Trabzonspor this week and could find himself being targeted by teams in Europe again next summer as a result.

That’s according to Cameroon’s goalkeeping coach and icon Carlos Kameni, [via Africa Foot](https://africafoot.com/kameni-ce-pret-a-trabzonspor-va-faire-du-bien-a-onana/), who has admitted he told the goalkeeper as much during the international break.

Onana complete a loan move to Trabzonspor earlier this week after it was made clear that he was not a part of Manchester United’s plans moving forwards.

He had started the season being replaced by Altay Bayindir, while the deadline day arrival of Senne Lammens added further competition. It’s believed he will be Manchester United’s number one moving forwards.

They had hoped for a permanent exit this summer but have instead sanctioned the loan move to Trabzonspor for the season in the interim.

Onana had to accept that of course and Kameni believes he was right to do so and told him as much when he last saw him.

It’s a good choice. André was struggling at Manchester United,” he said.

“Last season, he was heavily criticized, and since the start of the season, he’d barely played (one Cup match), and everyone, including him, understood that he was likely to spend a lot of time on the bench or in the stands.

“I told him he was right. It’s a good choice. It’s better to be a starter at a very good club in a good league than a substitute at a big club in a big league, right? In Turkey, he’ll certainly be watched, because he’s a very good goalkeeper, but I think he’ll be under a little less pressure than at Manchester United.”

The hope, for both Onana and Manchester United, is that he can repair his battered reputation this season during his time in Türkiye and secure a permanent exit next summer.

United will be keen to try and recoup as much of the €50.2m they paid to sign the goalkeeper from inter Milan in 2023. And Kameni believes there will be teams in Europe who come calling.

“Yes. He hasn’t lost his qualities at Manchester United,” he said when asked if he’ll be back at a top five European side next season.

“As can happen to all great athletes, he may experience a more complicated spell for a few months. André Onana is very professional, he remains a reliable player, and if he has a good season in Turkey, he’ll be in demand next summer.”
