The first chance came inside the opening five minutes. The second arrived not long after, before the second half started with another opportunity.

All three fell to Beto. All three were missed. The first was by far the worst of the lot. He should have scored. Simple as that.

Everton should have been ahead. But somehow Beto got it all wrong and somehow fired well wide.

It was the sort of opportunity that you would expect a Premier League forward to take.

But that is the problem with Beto; questions still remain as to whether he is good enough.

David Moyes revealed last month he was showing some tough love to the Guinea-Bissau international to try and improve him.

But the Blues boss could be forgiven for tearing his hair out after this.

It was that sort of display that saw his side pick up one point when it should have been all three.

It would be wrong not to point out that you can’t knock Beto’s workrate. He gives his all, and he gave both Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa a tough afternoon here.

But the reality is that he didn’t score. And he had plenty of opportunities to do so.

Following the closure of the summer transfer window, plenty of Everton supporters were left feeling satisfied with the club’s business.

The arrival of Jack Grealish had given everyone a lift, but some fans rightly wondered whether another forward was required, especially after Youssef Chermiti joined Rangers.

The answer is yes after this. When Moyes eventually took Beto off after 74 minutes, all the evidence to support that point had been collected.

This should have been another win for Everton. The fact it wasn’t was largely because Beto couldn’t take the opportunities that came his way.

And unfortunately for his manager, he learnt the hard way that he still needs another centre-forward, especially if his side are going to make the Hill Dickinson Stadium into a fortress.

Without one, there could be many more days like this.
