Lucas Digne was injured against Everton

A Premier League star suffered a gruesome injury when he clashed with his own teammate.

Lucas Digne was left with a huge bruise above his eye after he collided with the boot of his goalkeeper, Emi Martinez. Digne had been attempting to defend a cross when he took a whack to the forehead thanks to the Argentine's boot.

Martinez was back between the sticks for Aston Villa after his proposed move to Manchester United fell through on Transfer Deadline Day. And medics raced on to the pitch to tend to the Frenchman after the clash.

Digne was seemingly OK, but TV cameras picked up an unsightly bruise above his eyebrow.

Villa fans were quick to react to the bump on social media with one joking it looked like a "tennis ball."

"Look at the size of the bump on Lucas Digne’s forehead my god," one fan posted. While a second said: "Some welt on the side of Lucas Digne’s head!"

"Hopefully the swelling doesn’t worsen and he recovers quickly—no doubt he’s giving everything for Villa today," a third posted. As a fourth shared: "Football is so far behind other sports in looking after players, ridiculous he hasn’t been taken for a full concussion test!"

And another added: "The protocols really need to change for this and they need to start subbing them off, regardless of what the player is saying, for their own safety!"

Digne remained on the pitch and played out the resulting 90 minutes as neither team could break the deadlock at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Matty Cash said after the game: "Tough match. We had a few chances to win the game. They had a few chances as well. A clean sheet is positive, but we want to pick up points, and we want to win games.
