Nick Woltemade insists he could not have asked for more on his Newcastle United debut - and admits that the St James' Park crowd blew him away after scoring the winner against Wolves.

The German star's team-mates pushed him to the Gallowgate End to milk the applause after his name was chanted throughout the narrow win following his headed strike in the first half.

It turned the page quickly on Alexander Isak's sale to Liverpool on deadline day and instantly paid back a slice of his £69m fee, leaving Eddie Howe and his coaching staff thrilled.

There were a few murmurs in the crowd when Woltemade's number came up with 25 minutes to go, only for the ex-Stuttgart man to explain he had "cramps".

Woltemade told Chronicle Live: "It can't be better - I was really happy when I scored the goal, but we won the game, so I am really happy for the team.

"It can't be better for me on my debut, a goal on my home debut and a win, really happy. The crowd made me feel really welcome, when I scored all I could see were happy faces.

"I want to enjoy every moment. And I am looking forward to a few more games."

Woltemade has only worked with his team-mates for four days after Germany commitments in World Cup qualifying. But after Stuttgart accepted the £69m bid for his services two weeks ago, he only took a second to say yes to Howe.

Woltemade said: "My agent does his job, but as soon as he told me Newcastle were interested in me, I was really happy, then the talks started.

"When the talks started, I felt really welcome straight away and had nice conversations with the coach. I am just really happy to be here."

After being afforded a standing ovation at St James' Park by a sell out crowd, Woltemade lifted the lid on why he went off.

The German striker said: "The Premier League is quite hard, I had to go out because I had cramps.

"For the first game I think it's OK to come in. It was amazing, the atmosphere, the team played really good balls, they involved me a lot. I think we did quite good.

"It was a hard game because we didn't win a game in the league before and it was really important that we won a game, especially a home game and we can look forward to the games."

Woltemade also said that Howe's coaching had left him feeling on top of the world in just a few days.

He said: "I think the coach already gave me such a good feeling, so I felt good on the pitch. I knew what to do and I guess you saw today everybody knew what they have to do. This win was really important."
