The Brisbane Lions will host the 2025 Diwali Festival at Brighton Homes Arena, coinciding with their Round 11 AFLW clash with Melbourne.
The Lions are bringing the Diwali Festival to Brighton Homes Arena for the very first time — integrating a large-scale cultural celebration with an AFLW match day experience.
The Diwali Festival attracts up to 6,000 attendees with an afternoon of food, live performances, cultural activities, fireworks and this year, football.
Head of Women’s football Breeanna Brock said she was excited to welcome in a whole new demographic of fan to AFLW.
“We are in such a privileged position as a football club to host an amazing event such as Diwali at Brighton Homes Arena,” she said.
“We want to promote not only our incredible athletes but our state-of-the-art facility as both a cultural and sporting hub for the whole western corridor.”
Dr Preethi Suraj from the Federation of Indian Communities Queensland (FICQ) was grateful to the Brisbane Lions for hosting the 2025 Diwali Festival.
“Springfield has more than 1,500 Indian families in the community and it is incredible that the Lions are helping us host our annual Diwali celebration,” she said.
“Diwali is a festival of light and is celebrated all over India and around the world and this year we are excited to host the Springfield event at Brighton Homes Arena.”
Ipswich Acting Mayor Nicole Jonic said she was looking forward to a vibrant community celebration and exciting night of football.
“It’s wonderful to see the fusion of some of Ipswich’s best traditions - sport and our rich cultural diversity,” Acting Mayor Jonic said.
“Having the Diwali Festival at the Brisbane Lions Round 11 match day will allow families who might come for the game to experience the richness of Diwali, and it gives festival goers a chance to engage with the energy of match day.
“The Diwali Festival has outgrown its previous venues and that is a testament to how much it means to the community. This partnership is a great example of how sport and culture can blend to strengthen our community and celebrate the diversity that makes our city so vibrant.”
Federal Member for Oxley, Milton Dick MP, said he was looking forward to seeing the energy and action of a Diwali Festival and an AFLW match day together.
“It’s fantastic to see the Brisbane Lions hosting a Diwali Festival right here in Springfield,” he said.
“With support from the FICQ, this event is a wonderful celebration of our vibrant multicultural community - bringing the spirit of India along with all the energy and action of the AFLW together in the heart of Oxley.”
