New Orleans Saints: Acquire Wide Receiver Currently Out for Season

The New Orleans Saints have been very active in addressing the wide receiver position over the past month. New Orleans acquired Devaughn Vele from the Denver Broncos on August 20 in exchange for a 2026 fourth-round pick and a 2027 seventh-round pick. The Saints proceeded to claim former Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Trey Palmer off waivers the day after roster cuts.

According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the New Orleans Saints have agreed to a single-player and two-late-round picks trade. The Saints acquire Ja’Lynn Polk, while the Patriots receive a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 seventh-round pick. Here’s a quick review of his NFL career

The New England Patriots originally held the 34th overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft but passed on Ladd McConkey, trading back with the Los Angeles Chargers and drafting Ja’Lynn Polk with the 37th overall selection. He had a rough rookie season, catching just 36.4% of his targets and dropping four passes, resulting in a 12.1% drop rate. Polk had 12 receptions on 33 targets for 87 yards and two touchdowns across 15 games and seven starts.

Polk originally underwent right shoulder surgery during the offseason and re-injured the same shoulder in the preseason opener against the Washington Commanders. The second-round pick had not practiced since the injury and underwent season-ending shoulder surgery on August 21. Had he stayed healthy, he may not have survived roster cuts.

New Orleans Saints hope he returns to his 2023 form

The Saints hope Ja’Lynn Polk can return to his 2023 form from his time with the Washington Huskies. He had a breakout redshirt sophomore campaign in his final college season, emerging as one of the top targets for Michael Penix Jr. and helping lead Washington to the National Championship Game. Polk hauled in 69 receptions for 1,159 yards and nine touchdowns.
