After a promising victory against Nottingham Forest prior to the international break, West Ham fans would have been hoping their team would build on a good performance in the Midlands.
Instead, it is back to the drawing board for Graham Potter and his coaching staff as the Hammers fell to a 3-0 defeat against London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
The hosts had a great chance to take the lead, but after that, it was all Tottenham who thoroughly deserved the three points in this encounter. It also continues Thomas Frank's good start to life as head coach of Spurs with nine points out of twelve so far.
Story of the match:
The encounter began quite evenly matched between the two sides, with neither able to gain the ascendancy in the opening stages of the match.
The first big chance of the game fell in favour of West Ham, who should have taken the lead in the match through Lucas Paqueta. The Brazilian was able to find some space on the edge of the box, but dragged his shot wide of the post.
Soon after, Tottenham thought that they had taken the lead as Cristian Romero headed the ball into the back of the net from a corner. The Argentine ran off in celebration, but this was cut short by the referee's whistle, who deemed that there was a foul leading to the goal. Micky van de Ven had two hands on the back of Kyle Walker-Peters and was determined to have fouled him. VAR upheld this decision.
From this point forward, Tottenham were in charge, controlling the tempo of the match and allowing their opponents very little time on the ball.
They were also enjoying a large amount of corners, which arguably was the largest source of threat from the visitors in the first half. But, Thomas Frank's men just simply could not find a way through in the first half as the teams went into the break level.
West Ham would have been happy to go in at the break level, but certainly may have felt unlucky not to have got on the scoresheet through Paqueta. Tottenham knew they would need to come out of the blocks quickly to gain control of proceedings.
The visitors did exactly what was needed of them, as only two minutes after the break, they found the back of the net from a corner. Pape Sarr got on the end of the corner from Xavi Simons, who grabbed an assist in his Tottenham debut.
The Hammers had a mountain to climb now as they looked to wrestle the momentum into their favour, but things would soon get much worse for them when Tomas Soucek was shown a straight red.
The midfielder caught Palhinha with his studs up, giving the referee a simple decision to make.
It did not take long for Tottenham to capitalise on their man advantage as Lucas Bergvall doubled their lead only three minutes after Soucek was dismissed from play.
West Ham's defence was caught sleeping as a ball was played towards the Swede, whose looping header flew into the back of the net, well out of reach for Mads Hermansen.
Things did not get any better for the hosts as two very swiftly became three for Tottenham as van de Ven added to his team's tally. Bergvall brought the ball forward before laying it off to the Dutchman, who hit it first time into the bottom-left corner of the goal.
West Ham were defeated, as many of the fans headed for the exit. This is the second London Derby this season that West Ham have hosted, with the other being the 5-1 loss to Chelsea on a miserable night for the Hammers - this one was no different.
On the contrary, it was a great night for Spurs, who continued their strong start to the season and bounced back from the Bournemouth defeat on the first attempt.
The Swede certainly stood out as a key player in this match, taking charge of the game after Thomas Soucek's dismissal. He was switched on for his goal, catching out West Ham's defence and producing a wonderful header to double his side's lead.
He also provided the assist for van de Ven's goal, grabbing his first of the season. It was such a high-level performance from such a young player who continues to develop for Tottenham
