The Dallas Cowboys didn’t open the 2025 campaign with a win in Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles, but they put together a better outing than many folks were expecting from them in their 24-20 loss. Ahead of Week 2, the Cowboys made an intriguing move in an effort to add another playmaker to their offense.

With Dak Prescott back under center, Dallas looked strong on offense, with guys like CeeDee Lamb and Javonte Williams turning in big games around him. However, you can never have too many playmakers on offense, and that led the front office to make an intriguing move involving wide receiver Ryan Flournoy.

The Cowboys selected Flournoy in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft as a developmental prospect. As a rookie, Flournoy suited up for 11 games, primarily working as a special teams player. He did find his way onto the field on offense several times, though, as he caught 10 passes for 102 yards.

After latching on with Dallas’ practice squad this year, Flournoy was immediately elevated for the first game of the season to help on special teams again. He was quickly sent back to the practice squad after the game, but it has become clear that, even though he doesn’t have a consistent spot on the roster, Flournoy has carved out a role for himself.

It appears as though Flournoy may actually have a more consistent role moving forward, though. Ahead of the team’s second game of the season, the front office decided to sign Flournoy to the active roster, rather than just elevating him from the practice squad for this game. Alongside him, defensive backs Zion Childress and Robert Rochell were elevated to the active roster for this game as well.

“Cowboys signed WR Ryan Flournoy from their practice squad to their active roster. They also elevated DB Zion Childress and DB Robert Rochell from their practice squad,” Adam Schefter of ESPN reported in a post on X.

Ryan Flournoy Eyeing More Consistent Role with Cowboys Moving Forward

It’s going to be tough for Flournoy to find a consistent role on offense for the Cowboys, as they have Lamb, George Pickens, Jalen Tolbert, and KaVontae Turpin leading the way at wide receiver. If Flournoy can keep on contributing on special teams, though, he could eventually earn some offensive snaps as the season goes on if injuries begin to pile up.

Flournoy could immediately get thrown back into the action for Dallas in Week 2, as they will take on the New York Giants in another clash of NFC East rivals. Whereas the Eagles are a proven Super Bowl contender, the Giants are very much not, and they struggled mightily in a 21-6 loss to the Washington Commanders in Week 1. Dallas will look to earn its first victory of the season, while also keeping New York winless, when it takes the field at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
