Alan Shearer drops his Nick Woltemade verdict after ‘dream’ debut against Wolves

Alan Shearer has sung the praises of Nick Woltemade after scoring in his debut for Newcastle United against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

By no means was it a classic performance, but it was more than enough to secure the three points for the Magpies at St James’ Park.

Nick Woltemade made his debut one to remember, thanks to his goal for Newcastle United against Wolves, a brilliant headed effort from a Jacob Murphy cross.

The German also performed brilliantly during build-up play, dropping into the midfield to allow Eddie Howe’s wingers to move inside and break through on goal.

It was a goal worthy of winning any game, and one that would have reminded some fans of Newcastle legend Alan Shearer during the peak of his career.

With the win secured, Shearer has spoken about why that goal will mean so much to the striker.

Shearer was buzzing immediately after Woltemade scored, but the club’s record goalscorer went into more detail when speaking on the official Premier League website after the final whistle.

“Newcastle needed a forward, someone who can put the ball in the back of the net, and hopefully that’s the first of many for Nick Woltemade.

“It’s a dream debut for him and a day he’ll never forget.”

Woltemade follows in the footsteps of Shearer, who also scored on his debut for the Magpies. However, Shearer’s goal was from the penalty spot, so Woltemade can take some pride in his being from open play.

Newcastle fans think they are onto a winner with Woltemade after his debut goal, and they cannot wait to see him back in action.

Nick Woltemade made history in another way with Newcastle United goal

Woltemade is the replacement for Alexander Isak, who joined Liverpool for a British record transfer fee of £125m on deadline day. The Swede is yet to make his debut for the Reds, but could be in action when Liverpool play Bournemouth on Sunday.

For now, at least, Newcastle fans can say that Woltemade has more goals than the likes of Isak and Benjamin Sesko, who also turned down a move to Newcastle for Manchester United.

In the meantime, Woltemade can take pride in the fact that he became the third German player to score on his debut in the Premier League.

The 23-year-old follows in the footsteps of Jurgen Klinsmann and Ilkay Gundogan in that regard, a fine list to join on debut.

Woltemade could be back in Newcastle’s starting XI when they take on Barcelona in the Champions League on Thursday, which looks like a possibility given Yoane Wissa is out with a knee injury.
