“I was shocked…”Former Premier League star admits he’s‘very worried’about Manchester United transfer decision

A former Premier League star has expressed his fears regarding Manchester United’s goalkeeping conundrum, stating he was ‘shocked’ by their decision.

Manchester United’s start to the Premier League season has been one of slight underwhelm, with Ruben Amorim’s side picking up four points from their first three fixtures.

The Reds’ sole win came at home against Burnley, with a 97th-minute Bruno Fernandes penalty being the difference between the sides.

After the first international break of the season, United will make the short journey to the Etihad to take on close rivals Manchester City, where Altay Bayindir will start between the sticks.

With Amorim’s side acquiring the services of 23-year-old Senne Lammens, many questions are being asked surrounding the future of United’s number one spot.

United need an ‘experienced’ goalkeeper

When speaking to Sky Sports about United’s goalkeeping dilemmas of late, former Swansea and Wales centre-back Ashley Williams claimed that Amorim’s side are causing problems for themselves, and that he’s very worried about United’s decision to sign Lammens over an experienced shot-stopper.

Williams said, “I was shocked, really. They had a few areas where I think they needed to upgrade, and they did an okay job on the rest of them. They needed a goalkeeper; they needed an experienced one.

“They needed somebody to take control of that 18-yard box, which wasn’t happening at all, the exact opposite. So, now they’re left with these two.

“We seem to speak about Manchester United so much, but Manchester United and Ruben Amorim almost create problems for themselves, and talking points for us to talk about on the negative side.

“If it was me, one of the first things I’d have been trying to identify was, ‘I need a goalkeeper,’ because Andre Onana was making so many mistakes for so long that this was always coming.”

"Manchester United create problems for themselves."

When will we see Lammens?

With it confirmed that Amorim is sticking with his Turkish international for the derby on Sunday, the question then becomes, when will we see the introduction of Lammens?

Now that the Reds are out of the Carabao Cup, there are only FA Cup fixtures and league fixtures for the two keepers to share their minutes.

United have some tricky fixtures on the horizon, including the Manchester derby, Chelsea, and a trip to Anfield to take on the champions, which may not be the optimal time for Lammens to be thrown in.

On paper, it seems like United’s home fixture against Sunderland on the 4th October could be the first time we get to see what United’s new Belgian can produce.
