Ruben Amorim shocked as Man Utd ‘dream target’ wants to join Liverpool

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim will be hugely disappointed to learn that a top midfield target is keen on a move to Liverpool and work under boss Arne Slot, according to a report.

Liverpool and Man Utd are two of the biggest clubs in the world, and both were very active in the summer transfer window. While Liverpool signed the likes of Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, among others, Man Utd strengthened their squad with the acquisitions of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Senne Lammens and Diego Leon.

Man Utd were also on the hunt for a midfielder in the summer, with Carlos Baleba their top target.

However, Brighton and Hove Albion were adamant that they would not sell Baleba, which led the Red Devils to pursue Adam Wharton instead.

Wharton is one of the best and most dynamic midfielders in the Premier League, with the Crystal Palace and England international able to impose himself on games and provide an all-around display in the middle of the park.

TEAMtalk’s transfer correspondent, Fraser Fletcher, reported on August 27 that Wharton is Man Utd’s ‘dream target’.

Man Utd believe that under manager Amorim, Wharton has ‘the ideal profile to bolster’ their engine room.

TEAMtalk understands that Man Utd scouts believe that the 21-year-old is the ‘perfect target’ for the Red Devils.

Palace, though, stood firm on their stance of not selling Wharton, who remains at Selhurst Park for the time being.

Fraser Fletcher subsequently reported on September 9 that Liverpool have joined Man Utd in the race for Wharton.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot wants to strengthen his engine room and would love to sign the midfielder to compete with the current players he has in his squad.

According to DaveOCKOP.com, Wharton wants to join Liverpool and ‘prefers’ the defending Premier League champions to ‘other suitors’.

Real Madrid are also said to be interested in Wharton, but the Palace star is ‘understood to favour a move to Anfield over other suitors’.

This development on the future of Wharton would come as a shock for Man Utd manager Amorim, who will have to think of ways to convince the midfielder to change his stance on a switch to Liverpool.

Chelsea and Newcastle United also want Adam Wharton – sources

While Liverpool will be emboldened in their pursuit of Wharton, the defending Premier League champions must be wary of the competition they are facing.

Sources have told TEAMtalk that Chelsea and Newcastle United are also keen on Wharton and will continue to monitor him this summer.

Newcastle want more homegrown talent in their squad, with manager Eddie Howe of the opinion that Wharton is an ideal fit to complement Bruno Guimaraes.

Chelsea’s interest stems from their strategy of signing top young players who can develop into global superstars.

Palace are a major club in the Premier League and will not want to sell Wharton, but with so many clubs after the midfielder, it is going to be tough for last season’s FA Cup winners to stop him from leaving, if not in January, then certainly next summer.
