Seahawks plan to avoid IR stint for rookie safety Emmanwori

The Seattle Seahawks aren’t planning to place rookie safety Nick Emmanwori on injured reserve, head coach Mike Macdonald said Friday.

Seahawks Injury Report: CB Devon Witherspoon doubtful vs Steelers

Emmanwori, an ultra-talented second-round draft pick, suffered a high-ankle sprain while tackling star running back Christian McCaffrey for a loss on the opening defensive series of Seattle’s Week 1 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers this past Sunday.

On Monday, Macdonald said the Seahawks were considering placing Emmanwori on injured reserve, which would require him to miss at least four games.

But on Friday, Macdonald said they’ve decided against that for the time being, with the hope Emmanwori will miss fewer than four games.

“I don’t think it’s like a steady line that you can project, which makes it tricky,” Macdonald said of Emmanwori’s injury. “But we’re hoping it’s less than the time it would take on IR. That’s why we haven’t done it yet.”

Emmanwori is guaranteed to miss at least one game, as he’s been ruled out for Sunday’s Week 2 road matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

After facing the Steelers, the Seahawks host the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 21, travel to face the Arizona Cardinals on Sept. 25 and then host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Oct. 5.
