Buonanotte unable to have major impact in his first start for Chelsea

The young Argentinian was named in Enzo Maresca's starting eleven against Brentford this evening at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Buonanotte started alongside familiar Brighton players Joao Pedro, Caicedo and Roberto Sanchez.

Maresca used the 20-year-old as a central attacking midfielder a role usually reserved by Chelsea's star player Cole Palmer.

Palmer went off injured in the warm-up prior to Chelsea's 5-1 win away at West Ham and has come back on the bench against Brentford this evening.

He came off the bench to score in the 61st minute with an assist from £60 million centre forward Pedro.

Buonanotte looked comfortable in his role, taking on number 40 shirt, and stayed central for the majority of the first half.

He made a few recovery runs back in defence to help the backline, using his pace to press Brentford's attacking players.

The Argentinian used that same pace to make runs in behind the Bees three centrebacks in the box, but Chelsea's playmakers hesitated to make the pass and would favour a cross to Joao Pedro.

He lacked the freedom of movement and seemed to be told to stick centrally, so was left with little options than pulling defenders away from Joao Pedro for a chance for the Brazilian to break through.

Buonanotte nearly had a chance at goal in the 44th minute, but couldn't find his footing and decided to pass the ball to Fernandez who shot it wide.

His time was cut short when the loanee was subbed off at half-time for Tyrique George.

Buonanotte completed a season-long loan move to Chelsea for a fee in the region of £2 million.

The Argentina international joined [Albion](https://www.theargus.co.uk/sport/albion/) from Rosario Central in 2023 and has since scored five goals in 50 appearances.

The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Leicester City, where he scored six goals in 35 outings. Now, the attacking midfielder will spend the 2025/26 campaign with the Blues - something he is thrilled about.

According to multiple reports earlier this week, Buonanotte has already made a "good impression" on his new Chelsea team-mates.

During the international break, a behind-closed-doors friendly was held involving senior players and the under-21s - The Argentinian managed to find the back of the net three times.

When asked by _The Athletic_ about what kind of impact Buonanotte can make on the Chelsea squad, Maresca said: “He is a good player. I know him because he was in Leicester and I was there \[before\], so I have some contact there.

"He’s a player who can help us. We have so many competitions, so many games, that for sure he’s going to play games for us.”
