Ruben Amorim has made a decision in goals with the Man Utd boss explaining his thoughts on signing Senne Lammens and selling Andre Onana.

Ruben Amorim will be confident that Manchester United have a stronger squad than the one that started when the transfer window opened.

The Red Devils boss dropped Andre Onana last season before reinstating him, but the Cameroon international’s time at Old Trafford was never smooth sailing. A loan move to Trabzonspor doesn’t have any option or obligation to buy which means that he will be back next summer, even if only for a short while. The signing of Senne Lammens suggests that Onana won’t be in the long-term plans of the club.

Amorim explains why Senne Lammens was signed by Man Utd

Amorim is clearly delighted to sign the Royal Antwerp stopper who, speaking ahead of the derby with Man City, explained why the Belgian was targeted, via United’s official club website: "We are really pleased. He’s a goalkeeper with a lot of potential. I know that we are in the moment that the goalkeeper needs to be really strong and have a lot of experience but we are also in the moment that we have to look at the present, but with a focus on the future. So, it’s a little bit of both.

“A guy with great potential that is one more option, one more option to play, and he’ll be ready.

"Sometimes you as a club, you try to see different options, sometimes you’re able to do one option or another. We have an option that can give us different things in the moment, but also has a great potential to be our goalkeeper for a lot of years. So that was our choice in the end."

Lemmens will have to wait for his chance though with the United boss confirming that Altay Bayindir will keep his place in goals against City with the decision to move on from Onana being down to the younger stoppers’ age and being able to develop further.

United had been linked with Emi Martinez of Aston Villa during the summer but Amorim’s comments above point to strategy of targeting younger players to help future-proof the squad.

What Amorim said about moving on from Onana

It wasn’t for the want of trying, but Onana never looked entirely comfortable in a United shirt and made too many mistakes to come back from, Amorim was still full of praise for the 29-year old though and gave him a glowing reference: "It could be, but I think not just us as a club, but also Andre, we understood that this needed a change, and sometimes it’s hard to perform why. It’s the performance, the moment, the bad luck in some moments was hard on him, was hard on us.

“Our thinking is to have a change in the goalkeepers, but I wish the best to Andre Onana. He was really good on working, trying to help the players, but sometimes you can have all the quality in the world but you need to change the environment to return to your level, and I think that was the feeling not just for us but Andre as well."

Unlike many who left Old Trafford who left in the summer, one thing that couldn’t be aimed at Onana was that his attitude wasn’t right or that he didn’t appreciate the size of the club. If more of United’s recent signings had this attitude, they wouldn’t have had to spend most of the summer clearing them out.
