Pittsburgh Steelers add former Seahawks linebacker before game

The Pittsburgh Steelers are elevating inside linebacker Jon Rhattigan from the practice squad to the active roster for Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Rhattigan is coming up for special teams snaps. With Malik Harrison out for the next few weeks due to an MCL sprain, someone had to come up and replace his special teams snaps, and Rhattigan will be able to do just that. Harrison played 16 special teams snaps against the New York Jets.

Rhattigan was an undrafted free agent out of Army in the 2021 NFL Draft. He signed with the Seattle Seahawks initially, staying with the team from 2021 through 2023. He spent 2024 with the Carolina Panthers after being released by the Seahawks following training camp in 2024.

The Panthers released Rhattigan last week on August 28, and the Steelers could circle around and grab him. Heavily focused on special teams, Rhattigan has 44 career tackles over his four NFL seasons.

The Steelers are opting to bring him in with his pedigree and have him as a backup special teamer on the practice squad. Pittsburgh released linebacker Mark Robinson and he chose to go to the New England Patriots, so the team does have a need for another inside linebacker on the practice squad.

Rhattigan has played in 52 NFL games, with 12 special teams tackles in his season with the Panthers last year. He ran a 4.77 40-yard dash at his pro day in 2021 with Army.
