Pittsburgh Steelers tight end hit with fine for late hit in Jets game

Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Connor Heyward was fined $6,327 for a late hit on New York Jets cornerback Isaiah Oliver in the team’s 34-32 win.

The play occurred on a punt and during the play, Heyward comes from behind Oliver and gets smacked in the back. It was called unnecessary roughness on the field and cost the Steelers 15 yards, and now Heyward’s wallet is a bit lighter.

There were no other Steelers players fined during the game. Jets edge rusher Will McDonald received a $14,491 fine for a celebration that mimicked a ‘violent gesture.’

After a sack, McDonald pretended to throw a grenade, a celebration made popular by Memphis Grizzlies superstar Ja Morant. It was the second largest fine in Week 1 behind Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Jalen Carter, who lost his entire game check after spitting on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

All in all, the NFL fined players $129,678 for unsportsmanlike conduct over the course of the week. All benefits go to various benefits, including NFL veterans players fund.

The Steelers have been among the most fined teams in the NFL over the last few seasons. They led the league in 2023 and were the fifth-most fined team in the NFL in 2024.
