The Kansas City Chiefs‘ 27-21 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1 proved to be particularly rough for tight end Travis Kelce.

While Kelce registered two catches for 47 yards and a touchdown, he unintentionally took down his teammate, wide receiver Xavier Worthy, in the opening drive. Worthy suffered a dislocated shoulder and will not play against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2.

“I’ll take the most accountability myself. I wasn’t ready for that first drive, I ran into one of my guys and offed him out of the game,” Kelce lamented on his “New Heights” podcast. “That’s one of the most frustrating parts and it’s hard to get your juices going knowing you just hurt a guy.

“I just got to be better, man. I’m 13 years in the league, there’s no excuse for me running into my own guys like that and being able to play fast and help him out.”

In the third quarter, Chargers defensive tackle Teair Tart slapped Kelce’s facemask. While Tart was penalized for unnecessary roughness, he was not ejected for the hit. The NFL slapped him with a $12,172 fine on Saturday, September 13, and Chargers fans took immediate action.

Chargers Fans Started a GoFundMe To Help Teair Tart Pay His $12,172 Fine

Tart signed a one-year, $4.5 million contract with the Chargers ahead of the 2025 NFL season that included a $2 million signing bonus. However, Chargers fans are ready and willing to chip in toward the fine.

A GoFundMe fundraiser was created to help pay the fee, quickly raising $800. The fundraiser states in part, “As Chargers fans, we know one thing: we ride for our guys. Whether it’s making a clutch sack, holding the line, or standing up against the so-called ‘golden boy’ of Kansas City, Tart had our back on the field. And now, it’s our turn to have his.

“This GoFundMe is a fan-led effort to cover Tart’s fine in full. It’s not about violence—it’s about loyalty, brotherhood, and showing the NFL that Chargers Nation stands united.”

Apparently 12 people have donated $800 total to help Teair Tart of the Chargers pay his $12,172 for slapping Travis Kelce. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Chiefs Kingdom, however, wasn’t buying it. Chiefs Digest’s Matt Derrick saw the GoFundMe and posted, “Stop the world, I want to get off..” One woman replied, “The most insane thing I’ve ever seen since being on social media this world is nuts.”

One man commented, “For some, it is no longer enough to root for your side. You must cheer the demise of all against you. Sportsmanship may not be dead but is on life support.”

Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid Didn’t Agree With The Ref’s Call After Tart Slapped Kelce

During a press conference on Monday, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid struggled to comprehend why Tart was not ejected. “I don’t understand that rule,” Reid said.

“I guess it’s open-hand, fist, whatever, I don’t know. I don’t know what their decision was on that. But he definitely got hit in the head pretty hard, whether it was an open fist or a closed fist.”

NFL officiating and rules analyst Walt Anderson told NBC’s Terry McAuley during the broadcast that Tart was not ejected “because it was an open hand contact to the head that was not a disqualifying action. On this one, they felt that it was just an open hand blow to the head, not a closed fist, not a punch, and they did not disqualify in this case.”

Tart said he didn’t mean any harm. “Just being passionate in the moment,” he said, per The Athletic’s Daniel Popper. “It’s nothing but fun, competitive spirit. He also took a jab at Kelce’s famous fiancée on Instagram and posted, “I’m too swift with it even in Brazil…”
