There’s a lot that goes into creating a successful football team - just look at Merseyside, home to two of the country’s best. Whether it's coaches for skill and strategy or physiotherapists and sports scientists for fitness and injury prevention, much more happens behind the scenes than what meets the eye for Liverpool and Everton FC players.

This also includes those who are trusted with cutting their hair. Thankfully, footballers, from both the Reds and the Blues, don’t have to travel far as they can rely on a home-grown brand to deliver a spectacular service.

Barbers No 1 has been a go-to for athletes for several years now. A quick browse through any of their social media and undoubtedly a familiar face will soon pop up.

Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo, Yerry Mina, Richarlison de Andrade and Steven Gerrard have all paid the team a visit. Each new football season provides fresh opportunities for Barbers No 1 to expand its clientele, and this year, it did exactly that.

Brand director Jordan Roberts, from Huyton, told the ECHO: “We started off with Roberto Firmino and it has just gone from there. It’s word-of-mouth between all the players because they know they are all going to get the same level of service.

“They trust us and we are a good part of the team, they love coming to us and meeting fans outside the shops. Jack Grealish reached out to us prior to joining Everton, so we’ve been doing him for around two-and-a-half months. He’s one of the nicest lads I’ve ever met personally. This year we’ve also got Milos Kerkez and Giorgi Mamardashvili.”

Starting in St Helens, Barbers No 1 now has 16 locations across Merseyside, Warrington, Wigan and the first in Manchester opened just recently.

With the brand expanding rapidly, Jordan explained that their academy keeps the consistency the same among all their employees. The 30-year-old added: “It’s unbelievable to see where we are now. To go from one store to now 16 is crazy. Our name is pretty big in Liverpool, and it’s nice to see that. People in the city love to see their own doing well, becoming bigger.

“It is exactly what we envisioned to be expanding like this. We’ve always had a goal of ten stores, but now we want 20. By next year, we want 30 and are looking at the likes of Cheshire and other parts of Manchester.”

The brand’s latest store can be found in the Trafford Centre. Jordan explained that it came about after sports retailer JD reached out with a collaboration opportunity.

The barber said: “We got approached to work on the Climacool brand activation. It’s such an OG Liverpool thing, the Climacools, so they wanted to mix that in with some culture and that’s where we came in.

“We got approached by them again to do a pop-up with Adidas in The Trafford Centre. It was booked every day and we offered free haircuts to people who spent over a certain amount and from there a separate partnership with JD grew out of it all. Our focus is on Manchester for now, but long-term there is much more. We’re potentially exploring going into Dubai.”
